How to use
This
web application is capable of doing 5 types of searches. It can
search for an exact name, a partial name, a registration number, all the horses
sired by a specified stallion or all the horses born to a specified mare.
Exact Name Search
Partial Name Search
This
search is useful when you either don't know the exact name of the horse or the
exact name you tried turned up no results.
Registration Number Search
This
search is useful when you know the registration number on a horse. There
are several of the old original horses that were known under several
names. If you know the registration number then you can find what name
the horse was actually registered under.
Sire Search
This
search is useful if you want to find all the horses sired by a specific
stallion.
Dam Search
This
search is useful if you want to find all the horses born to a specific
mare. Mare owners that bought a mare after she has had several foals may
find this especially interesting.
Search Results
If
no matches are found then "Sorry, no data matched your request” will be
displayed. If a horse(s) is found that matches your search then a table
will be displayed showing the possible match(es) as well as the classification,
body color and date of birth. The names of the horses in the table are
links that can be clicked on to take you to more information on the
horse. Click on the underlined name of a horse in the table and you will
be taken to another screen that gives more information on that horse. If
the horse's sire or dam were registered then their registration numbers will be
underlined. These are links that will take you to the sire or dam's
detailed information page. By clicking on these links you can traverse
the pedigree of a horse all the way back to the last registered
ancestors. Additionally, if we have loaded pictures of the horse online
then those will be displayed on the bottom of the detailed information page as
thumbnails. These thumbnail pictures can be clicked on to display the
full size picture.
Starting A New Search
A
new search can be started at any time from the top of either the search results
page or the detailed information page. Both pages have a fully functional
search form at the top.
Example
Let’s say
that we want to look up Kilburn’s Chocolate
Sundown. I would start out entering his
exact name in the search box, making sure Whole Name is selected as the search
type and then clicking the search button.
The results I get from this was “Sorry, no
data matched your request”, but I know this SHOULD be correct. Anytime there is punctuation in horse’s name
it can be typed in a number of different ways, or even left out. Given that, the next step would be to enter
just part of his name. Since ‘Sundown’
could have been entered as two words (it was not in this case but let’s pretend
we don’t know that), we will pick ‘chocolate’ to enter as the partial name. Then select Partial Name in the search type
and click the search button. Wow do we
get a list from that! That search
produces about 5 screens worth of names on my computer. If we did not know that the name should start
out with something LIKE Kilburn’s then a list this
might be more then we would want.
Luckily, all we need to do is scroll down to where the names start with
the letter K. There are only 5 horses
that have names starting with K (at the time of this writing) and most are “Kilburn’s” horses.
Here is where we find out why the first search did not work. Kilburn’s
Chocolate Sundown does not have the apostrophe in his name. He was registered as Kilburns
Chocolate Sundown. Clicking on this name
will pull up his detailed information page.
His sire and dam were both unregistered horses, so there are no records
on them to go to, however, there is a picture at the bottom of the page
displayed as a thumbnail. Clicking on
that will display a larger version of the picture. You can return to the detailed information
page by clicking on the word BACK just under the picture. Now that we know his exact name, we can do a
search for all the foals he produced by typing Kilburns
Chocolate Sundown in the search box, selecting Sire in the search type and clicking
the search button. That generated almost
as long a list as our previous search! Click
on the first entry on the list ("MY MY"
SUNDOWN SPECIAL) and it will display her detailed information. Here you can see that the registration
numbers for both the sire and dam are underlined. These are links that will take you to the
parent’s record. If you click on the
dam’s registration number (in this case 910049 for Yankee’s Special Girl) it
will take you to Yankee’s Special Girl’s detailed record.
